Description
Horse-drawn car, World War I (1914-1918). Austrian soldiers standing in front of a car being drawn by horses. Horses were widely used throughout the war as a reliable, low-maintenance mode of transport. The advent of machine gun technology meant that their role shifted away from the battlefield, as cavalry charges became a redundant military tactic. Over eight million military horses died during the war. Photographed near Pruchnik, Poland, between 1914 and 1915.
