Description
Homo erectus (right) attacking Paranthropus sp. (left), artwork. Homo erectus is the most widespread and longest-surviving of all the fossil hominids. Its geographical spread included north and east Africa, Europe, Indonesia and China, where it lived between 1 and 2 million years ago. Paranthropus lived between 2.7 and 1.2 million years ago. It was short and stocky with substantial ridges on the skull suggesting it had powerful jaw muscles and a vegetarian diet.
