Description
Hominid skull. This is the skull of Australopithecus africanus, an early hominid which lived 3.3 to 2.5 million years ago. This example is a mature individual, though researchers are undecided on its sex. This species had a cranial capacity above the modern ape average and a slightly higher ratio of brain size to body size than more primitive hominid species. This example is STS 5, also known as Mrs. Ples. It was found in 1947 by Robert Broom in the Transvaal province of South Africa.
