Description
HL Tauri protoplanetary disk. Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) image of the young star HL Tauri (also called HL Tau) and its protoplanetary disk. This image, the best-ever of planet formation, reveals multiple rings and gaps that herald the presence of emerging planets as they sweep their orbits clear of dust and gas. This Sun-like star is located approximately 450 light years from Earth in the constellation of Taurus. ALMA is able to observe details hidden by the massive envelope of dust and gas enveloping the star and its emerging planetary system. The image was obtained using ALMA radio band 6 on 24 October 2014.
