Description
Hiram Stevens Maxim (1840-1916), US firearms inventor, driving a motor vehicle. Maxim invented the Maxim gun in 1884. This was the first fully automatic machine gun that could be carried by soldiers. The company he founded later merged with the Vickers company, who updated his gun design. Maxim is also credited with the invention of the mousetrap. He emigrated to the UK in 1881, and was knighted in 1901. This photograph, which was taken in the period from the 1890s to the 1930s, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
