Description
Hermann Alexander Bruck (1905-2000), German astronomer and 7th Astronomer Royal for Scotland. Bruck was born in Germany but fled from the rise of Nazism in 1936. He sought refuge in the Vatican, Rome, before pursuing his career in Britain. He worked in Cambridge, England and Dublin, Ireland before being elected Astronomer Royal for Scotland in 1957. He transformed the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh into a research centre of international standing by equipping it with cutting-edge automated instruments. After his retirement in 1975 he studied the history of astronomy alongside his wife Mary.
