Description
Herman Francis Mark (1895-1992), Austrian-US chemist. Mark served in the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War I. He studied at the University of Vienna, obtaining his doctorate in 1921. His pioneering research on polymers in Germany co-founded the science with Hermann Staudinger and Wallace Carothers. He analysed polymers with X-ray crystallography in the 1920s, and showed that most are made of flexible chains. In the 1930s, he returned to Vienna when the Nazis came to power, going the USA via Canada when Austria was annexed in 1938. He founded the Polymer Research Institute in Brooklyn, New York, in 1946.
