Description
Herbert Spencer's social philosophy. Chromolithograph showing British philosopher Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) holding a mirror up to the political system, magnifying and revealing the corruption of the powerful through his social philosophy. Spencer applied Darwin's ideas on evolution to man. Spencer also coined the phrase 'survival of the fittest' and applied it to sociology and economics. His ideas are seen as part of Social Darwinism. Artwork by Joseph Ferdinand Keppler published in 'Puck' magazine, New York, November 1882.
