Description
Heart valve disease. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the aortic valve of a 66 year old man. The aortic valve sits between the heart and the ascending aorta, the body's main artery. Here, fibrous and calcified atherosclerotic plaques (pink) surround the valve, impeding its ability to close properly and causing it to leak. In addition, this valve is only composed of two leaflets (bicuspid), when it is normally composed of three (tricuspid). This is a congenital (inherited) abnormality that is likely linked to the formation of these plaques. Surgical replacement of the valve with a prosthesis is required.
