Description
HD 69830 planetary system. Artwork of the planets that have been detected orbiting the star HD 69830 (upper right). This star is 40 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Puppis. Detected by the ground-based HARPS (High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher) instrument, there are three planets with masses between 10 and 18 Earth masses. HD 69830 has a mass slightly less than that of the Sun. The planets are all closer to their star than the Earth is to the Sun. There is also an asteroid belt. Its location is uncertain, but here it is shown between the outer two planets. The HARPS results were announced in 2006.
