Description
Harriet Quimby (1875-1912), US aviator, in the cockpit of an aeroplane. Quimby was the first woman to get a US flying license, receiving her accreditation in 1911. She flew across the English Channel on 16 April 1912, becoming the first woman to do so. However, the sinking of the Titanic the previous day meant that there was little interest in her feat. While flying a new Bleriot monoplane on 1 July 1912, the plane malfunctioned and she and her passenger fell out of the plane to their deaths. Photographed in 1911. Photograph from the Bain News Service.
