Description
HARPS planet-finding instrument spectrum. Light spectrum from the two laser-frequency combs that were tested for the HARPS (High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher) instrument. These laser-frequency combs were installed in April 2015. HARPS, used on the ESO 3.6-metre telescope at the La Silla Observatory in Chile, is a planet-finding instrument. The laser-frequency combs will allow an increase in accuracy, enabling the detection of Earth-mass planets in Earth-like orbits around other stars for the first time. HARPS has discovered numerous exoplanets since it became operational. Image released in May 2015.
