Description
Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland National Park, England. This view looks across Sycamore Gap, with a newly restored footpath in the foreground. The footpath is part of the careful management of the area to reduce the impact of thousands of visitors to this World Heritage Site. Visitors to the Wall are asked to use the footpath and not walk on the Wall itself. The 118-kilometre-long wall was built from 122 AD at the order of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Its purpose was to defend Roman Britain from the Picts to the north.
