Description
Flower-rich hay meadow. These flowers are cultivated for hay and are carefully managed to ensure the seeds disperse and produce a good crop in subsequent years. Flower-rich hay meadows, especially upland hay meadows like this one, are internationally rare. They are a haven for wildlife with commonly over 25 plant species per square metre. The drastic decline is in traditional hay meadows is a result of agricultural intensification, which demands more hay and silage to feed stock. Photographed in the North Tyne Valley, Northumberland National Park, UK.
