Description
Chicxulub crater. Coloured gravity anomaly map of the Chicxulub impact crater which may have caused the death of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. North is at top. A gravity anomaly occurs where the local gravitational field is different from the expected value. Here, the colours range from red (higher than expected) through yellow and green (normal) to blue (lower than expected). The 180- kilometre wide crater (at centre) has a negative gravity anomaly because it is filled with low- density rocks (impact debris and sediments). The other anomalies were not caused by the impact. The crater is on the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico.
