Description
Chicxulub impact ejecta. Melt spherules ejected from the Chicxulub meteorite impact crater. This impact occurred about 65 million years ago and may have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. These spherules were formed when rocks in the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico, melted when they were struck by the meteorite. They landed southeast of the impact site in an ocean basin which is now the island of Haiti. Originally quenched glass, the spherules have been altered to clay. Material ejected from the Chicxulub crater covers a wide area and forms the K/T layer which lies between older Cretaceous (K) and younger Tertiary (T) rocks.
