Description
Grasshopper casing shed by a grasshopper (suborder Caelifera). This is an empty shell of exoskeleton, left behind by the grasshopper as it develops through stages (called instars) from the juvenile forms (nymphs) to the adult form. The nymphs moult five times, getting bigger each time, eventually reaching adult size with fully functional wings. Photographed in Howick, South Africa.
