Description
Globular cluster and planetary nebula. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of globular cluster NGC 1846, a collection of old stars in the outer halo of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a dwarf galaxy the neighbours our galaxy the Milky Way. At bottom centre is a green sphere that is a planetary nebula, a glowing shell of gas cast off by a Sun-like star near the end of its life. They are short lived objects, lasting only around 10,000 years before the central star cools and loses the energy required to ionise the gas, which causes it to fade. Data obtained by the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the HST.
