Description
Giovanni Filippo Ingrassia (1510-1580), Sicilian physician, at lower left, presenting his book to his patron King Philip II of Spain (coat of arms as Sicilian monarch at top left). Ingrassia studied at the University of Padua under Vesalius, then worked at Naples and Palermo, and in 1563 was appointed Chief Physician of Sicily by King Philip. Ingrassia identified the stapes bone of the middle ear, and was the first to distinguish measles from scarlet fever. This artwork is from Ingrassia's 'Informatione del pestifero' (1576), his work on measures to contain the Black Death (bubonic plague), an outbreak of which occurred in Sicily in the period 1575-6.
