Description
German aeroplane bomb, World War I. German soldier handling a bomb beside an aeroplane during World War I (1914-1918). Aeroplanes, a relatively new technology, were improved as the war progressed. They were used for bombing, but more commonly for aerial reconnaissance over enemy lines. This bomb is of a type that has a vane and propeller to prevent premature detonation. The propeller rotates as the bomb falls through the air, turning a screw that completed the firing mechanism. This photograph, dating from 16 January 1915, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
