Description
George B. Kistiakowsky, one of the scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project, the American programme to develop and build the first atomic bomb during World War Two. The team worked under conditions of strictest secrecy from 1943 to 1945 at a remote makeshift laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Kistiakowsky headed the explosives division within the project. His work was essential to the development of the Fat Man" type of atomic fission bomb. This device relied upon the carefully orchestrated compression of a subcritical mass of plutonium using explosive charges to render it supercritical."
