Description
Galaxy cluster Abell 370, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image. Galaxy clusters are gravitationally bound groupings of galaxies. They can contain hundreds of galaxies and be millions of light years across. Abell 370 is 4.9 billion light years away, in the constellation of Cetus. The thin arcs and lenticular objects are distorted images of background galaxies created by the gravitational field of the cluster. Image obtained in visible and infrared light on 16 July 2009 by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). Published as part of the Hubble Servicing Mission 4 Early Release Observations (SM4 ERO).
