Description
Fundus camera image of the retina in a case of glaucoma, showing cupping of the optic disc, a vertical enlargement of the yellow circular area in centre of the image. Glaucoma generally implies a raised intraocular pressure. The condition is rarely congenital & is most usually acquired through a defect in the drainage of aqueous humour. In chronic simple glaucoma, a common cause of blindness in the elderly, cupping of the optic disc is accompanied by a raised intraocular pressure and a typical pattern of loss of vision. Treatment to reduce the pressure comes in the form of drugs or laser surgery.
