Description
End stage glaucoma: fundus camera image showing cupping of the optic disc, the vertical enlargement of the yellow circular area in centre of the image. Blood vessels appear hooked over the rim of the disc. Glaucoma describes a raised pressure within the eye; it is rarely congenital, but usually acquired through a defect in the drainage of aqueous humour. In chronic simple glaucoma, a common cause of blindness in the elderly, cupping of the optic disc is accompanied by a raised intraocular pressure and a typical pattern of loss of vision. Treatment with drugs & surgery aims to lower the pressure.
