Description
Fuegians. Engraved plate depicting a group of Fuegians, the indigenous peoples of Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of South America. Fuegians were one of three tribes leading a hunter-gatherer existence. Settlement of their lands by Europeans introduced diseases such as measles that decimated their populations. This plate was published in An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His present Majesty for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere, by John Hawkesworth, printed at London in 1773.
