Description
Frontispiece of Galileo's Dialogue on the Two Chief World Systems". The picture features Aristotle (left), Ptolemy, and Copernicus (right). The Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was made famous by his observations through the telescope. In his book "Dialogue on the Two Chief World Systems" he supported the heliocentric Copernican cosmology against the geocentric Ptolemaic model. This was judged heretical by the Inquisition in 1633 and Galileo was sentenced to house arrest for life. The Dialogue was not removed from the Catholic "Index of Prohibited Books" until 1835. Finally, in 1992, the Catholic Church formally admitted that it had been wrong."
