Description
Francis John Bolton (1831-1887), British army officer and electrical engineer. Bolton served in the Royal Artillery, working in the 1860s on visual signalling methods then on the new telegraphy technology. Promoted for his services to army signalling, Major Bolton was one of the eight founding members in 1871 of the Society of Telegraph Engineers and Electricians, later the Institution of Electrical Engineers. He was also the Society's honorary secretary, vice-president, and editor of its journal. He retired as honorary colonel in 1881, and was knighted in 1884.
