Description
Collection of four French and English domed ear trumpets, with decorative grilles. Ear trumpets were used to aid those with difficulties in hearing. Sound waves enter the wide 'sound collecting' dome and become amplified as they pass along the narrow tube and into the earpiece. The tip of the earpiece is placed in the ear canal of the user, amplification of the sound makes it easier to hear. These examples date from between 1869 and 1900.
