Description
Fossil belemnites. Belemnites are extinct marine molluscs. They are classified as cephalopods, the group that contains present-day cuttlefish, octopus and squid. They had ten tentacles, each with a double row of hooks, an ink sac and internal shell (the part seen preserved here). They evolved during the Carboniferous period (355 to 290 million years ago) and flourished during the Jurassic and Cretaceous (205 to 65 million years ago). Found on James Ross Island, Antarctica.
