Description
Flame Nebula (NGC 2024). Infrared image showing this nebula (upper centre), the cluster of young stars at its heart, and the reflection nebula NGC 2023 (lower centre). Also seen is a faint outline of the Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33, bottom right). The bright bluish star at upper right is one of the three bright stars forming the Belt of Orion. These nebulae are all around 1500 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Orion. The visible part of NGC 2024 is around 15 light years across. This was the first image published by VISTA (the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy), located at ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile.
