Fern rhizome, polarised light micrograph. Transverse section through the central portion of the underground stem (rhizome) of the bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum). In the centre of the stem are vascular strands (oval-round) called meristeles. Surrounding these are parenchyma cells (dark blue) and cells (black) of fibrous supporting tissue. Each meristele consists of an endodermis (black), a pericycle (green), and, at centre, wood cells (xylem, red). Magnification: x45 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
