Description
Hair. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a bundle of hairs. Hairs consist of a root which is implanted in the dermis of the skin and a shaft which represents the portion projecting from the epidermis. The root terminates with an enlargement, known as the bulb, which contains the hair matrix where the hair cells are produced. The shaft is divided into three concentric sheaths called the medulla, cortex and cuticle. The cuticle, the external sheath, is formed by a single layer of flat keratinised scales which overlap each other. Magnification: x75 at 6x7cm size. x115 at 4x5ins
