Description
Explosives industry, 19th century. Illustration of workers in an armaments factory producing the chemical mercury fulminate. This chemical was used as a primer (a trigger for the main explosives) in rifle and pistol ammunition. Artwork from volume 8 (1868) of a republication of 'Les Grandes Usines', a multi-volume work on French industry by journalist and author Julien Turgan (1824-1887).
