Description
Exoplanet transiting star. Artwork of a Jupiter-sized planet (lower centre) crossing its parent star, as seen from Earth. This passage across the star is known as transiting, and it causes a small but measurable reduction in the amount of light reaching Earth from the star. This allows exoplanets aligned correctly with respect to Earth to be detected when they transit their parent star. One class of planets found by the Hubble Space Telescope using this technique are 'hot Jupiters', gas giants that orbit very close to their parent star, completing an orbit within days or hours.
