Description
1845 illustration of the execution of Lady Jane Grey. Lady Jane was nominated by the terminally ill 15-year-old King Edward VI as his successor. She was de facto queen for nine days, but was deposed on 19 July 1553 and replaced by Queen Mary (Edward's half-sister). Lady Jane (aged around 17) was put on trial for treason and she and her husband (Lord Guildford Dudley) and her father-in-law (the Duke of Northumberland) were all executed. Artwork by M Marckl from Les Prisons de l'Europe by Jules Alboise and Auguste Maquet.
