Description
Evangelista Torricelli(1608-1647), Italian physicist. Torricelli studied science in Rome. On reading his work on the dynamics of falling bodies, Galileo, invited Torricelli to visit him. Toricelli spent three months with Galileo, before Galileo's death in 1642, and then succeeded him as mathematician to the court of Tuscany. Torricelli invented the mercury barometer in 1643, identifying atmospheric pressure. The torr, a unit of pressure, was named in his honour. Artwork from 'Chaudieres et Machines a Vapeur' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
