Description
European hornets (Vespa crabro) guarding the entrance to their nest in a hollow tree. Hornets are social insects and live in nests made from wood pulp inside hollow trees. This species is the largest member of the wasp family found in the UK. Although they have a reputation for ill temper, hornets only sting when severely provoked. Photographed in the UK.
