Description
European hares (Lepus europaeus) 'boxing'. This behaviour is often seen in spring (hence the expression 'mad march hare'). It usually occurs between a female and a male, as the female fights off males if she is not ready to mate. The European hare, also called the brown hare, is native to northern, central and western Europe and western Asia. It inhabits open country, feeding on grass and herbs during the summer and twigs and bark in the winter. It is preyed upon by golden eagles, foxes and wolves. Photographed in the UK.
