Description
Ernst Stuhlinger (1913-2008), German rocket scientist, holding a model rocket. Dr Ernst Stuhlinger was a German-born American atomic, electrical and rocket scientist and was one of the first group of scientists who immigrated to the United States after World War II as part of Operation Paperclip. In the 1950s Stuhlinger helped develop guidance systems and played an important role in the race to launch a US satellite after the success of the Russian Sputnik 1 - he developed a simple spring-powered staging timer that had to be triggered from the ground.
