Description
Eocene foraminifera floating in an ocean. Artwork of specimens of the foraminiferan Acarinina mcgowrani floating in a prehistoric ocean. Foraminifera are microscopic single-celled protozoa that form part of the oceanic zooplankton. They construct and inhabit a calcium carbonate shell composed of several chambers. These are penetrated by pores through which cellular content (seen here) is extruded to catch their prey. This scene dates from the Eocene (56 to 34 million years ago), though this species went extinct around 38 million years ago.
