Description
Eocene animals and plants. Artwork of a scene in a Baltic forest in northern Europe during the Eocene (56 to 34 million years ago). This is semi-tropical woodland, with resin from gymnosperms trapping a praying mantid (centre left). This will eventually fossilise to form amber. At bottom is a mantophasmid insect. Also present are dragonflies, a butterfly, mayflies, and midges. In the background at lower right is the large flightless bird Diatryma. To its left are two Propalaeotherium (ancestral horses). At upper left is the lemur-like Europolemur.
