Description
Elephant petroglyph. Saharan engraving on a sandstone boulder. This is an example of a carving made in the bubalus (hunter or wild fauna) period, It dates from around 9,560 BC to 6,000 BC. At this time the climate of the Sahara was much wetter than today and supported savannah vegetation. The engravings from this period typically depict large animals, some now extinct, carved in a naturalist style. Photographed in Tadrart, Tassili National Park, Algeria.
