MODEL RELEASED. Lung function test. An elderly woman receives a lung function test. Lung function tests are carried out to confirm the presence of certain lung disorders or to assess the function of the lungs before surgery is carried out on them. Some tests measure how well the lungs expand and contract, while others measure how efficiently gases are exchanged by the lung's alveoli (air sacs).
