Description
Edestus giganteus shark, preying on fish, artwork. This species of prehistoric shark existed during the late Carboniferous period (306-299 million years ago). Based on fossilised jaw bones, Edestus was thought to measure six metres long. Its jaw consisted of teeth that continually grew from the back, pushing the older teeth forward. This resulted in giving the shark jaws the appearance of serrated scissors, hence its common name of 'scissor toothed shark.' It is not known what the shark ate or how it used its unusual jaws.
