Description
Earth and Hurricane Dean, satellite image. North is at top. Hurricane Dean is the large rotating cloud system (white) at upper left, in the western Caribbean, to the east of Mexico. Image obtained at 15:45 local time on 20 August 2007. By this stage, the hurricane had strengthened to become a category 5 hurricane with wind speeds of over 250 kilometres per hour, and a diameter of hundreds of kilometres. Hurricane Dean made landfall early in the morning of 21 August, coming ashore on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. It had formed over a week earlier near the Cape Verde islands (centre right) out in the Atlantic. Image obtained by NOAA's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-12).
