Description
Early balloon designs, 19th-century artwork. At top left, the never-built 'flying ship' (c.1670) of Francesco Lana de Terzi had four copper spheres. At top centre, the Montgolfiers' undertook the first manned ascent in a hot air balloon in November 1783. At left and right are the ascending and descending forms of a parachute-balloon of Andre Garnerin (from 1797 onwards). At centre Jacques Charles and Nicolas Robert are about to make the first untethered ascent with a gas hydrogen balloon in December 1783. At bottom are wings that attached to the balloon baskets of Vincenzo Lunardi and Jean-Pierre Blanchard (top right), both making their first ascents in 1784.
