Description
Interstellar hydrogen in Milky Way galaxy. Velocity-coded radio map showing cold interstellar hydrogen in our galaxy, taken at a wavelength of 21 cm with the Hat Creek radio telescope, Califor- nia. Thin filaments of gas curve over huge regions of sky. The map shows the whole sky between galactic latitudes +60 and -60 degrees. The horiz- ontal strip marks the plane of the Galaxy; the gas here was not studied because it is so dense that no features can be disinguished. The colours range from blue (gas approaching at 20 kilometres per second), through yellow-green (no Doppler shift), to red (receding at 20 km/s). The blank area at right is a region of sky not seen from California.
