Description
Eagle design for US coin. 19th-century illustration of a design of stars and an eagle, intended for a US coin. Inscribed 'United States of America', it dates from 1835-6. It was drawn by US naturalist Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885). Peale's father Charles Willson Peale founded a museum in 1786 in Philadelphia, with the Peale Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, established in 1814. Titian Peale helped with collecting and preserving specimens for display in the museum. The Philadelphia Mint (founded 1792), was established when the city was the temporary capital of the USA (1790-1800).
