Description
Double sextant and double circle. 19th-century illustration of the double sextant (top) and double circle (bottom) patented by a David Rowland. The double sextant allowed a single observer to measure two angles between three points at once. The double circle shown is a type of reflecting circle, similarly used to carry out astronomical or geographical surveying. Both devices shown here are types of reflecting instruments, using mirrors to aid surveying and measurements. These artworks are from a description of the devices published by Rowland in London in 1834. The patent by Rowland was submitted in 1833.
