Description
Donald Sharp Fredrickson (1924-2002), US physiologist. Fredrickson studied medicine at the universities of Colorado and Michigan. He spent most of his career at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), working on research on fat metabolism and genetic disorders related to lipids and cholesterol (such as Tangier disease). He carried out this research between 1953 and 1974. His classification of lipoprotein abnormalities was adopted by the World Health Organization in 1972. Here, he is Senior Investigator, Laboratory of Cellular Physiology and Metabolism, National Heart Institute. From 1975 to 1981, he was NIH Director. Photographed in February 1957.
